Wet Plate Portrait
The technique is called wet plate photography because a plate, is coated with an emulsion which is then made sensitive to light by immersing it in a solution of silver nitrate. This “wet plate” is then carefully placed in a camera without exposure to light, focussed on from a lens so that the image is projected onto the plate in the camera.Â
This method, is capable of producing images which can be made to a higher quality than any other method, including digital equipment. Each photo is unique and can be kept up to 150 years.
